Photo by: Franz Lukas Dive back into Alex Hall’s first interview! To read our latest interview with Alex, click here. I moved to Zurich, Switzerland when I was 1 years old. I started skiing around the age of 3. I ride for Faction Skis, Panda Poles, Adidas Eyewear and The Mecca Movement. I usually ski at Laax or Mythen for park and some other places for pow. I never had a coach before so I will see how that goes....
I can easily divide what I learned/ experienced into five parts. The first time I met him I was star stuck, I could barely hold a conversation. First thing he taught me is you never know who youll run into. Everyone on the mountain is there for an escape, and to enjoy skiing. Granted I was there for a PSIA convention, my purpose was more professional than the average joes....
The contest is based on 2 features, a jump and a rail section. This year was a 55 ft jump and some giant gaps onto a flat tube and down tube. This is a truly unique event for Ontario and it is one of the only rider judged contest. After riders meeting we all headed up to the jump feature for the morning session. Rockstar Energy was on site giving away their new energy water and a ton of stickers for everyone....
This is the life of a college skier. This simultaneous pursuit of skiing and a college degree drive the mind, body, and wallet to extremes. These sacrifices force friends, professors, and girlfriends to question our sanity. Yet sanity itself becomes a paradox: ski to be sane, be insane to ski. This is what they, the outsiders, fail to comprehend. The drive and monotony of academia stirs the deep internal desire for freedom that only skiing can give....
April 3rd, 2014 6:00 p.m. I look out the window to see large snowflakes falling and accumulating on the ground below me. The first snowstorm of April awaits us. I could barely contain myself enough to get good rest that night. Getting a “powder day” in Minnesota seems more rare than finding a needle in haystack. April 4th, 2014 8:00 a.m. Despite my exhausted body, I perk up to the sound of my alarm....
The good people at Evo have teamed up with NS to revamp the Member of the Month contest. This month were stoked to announce that TallxT aka Tall T Dan has been named as MOTM. Big ups to Dan for keeping us informed through the realness of Tall T Trudays. Look for more installments in the series coming soon. And always remember that lip on blind two is the only trick in the world....
Markus Eder has paved the way for Italian freeskiing, establishing a large presence in Europe. Why do you think this happened? Obviously it’s hard to do both on a high level as it’s super different. You’re from Italy, land of the gapers. What made you strive to be the best Italian freeskier at the moment? It took me completely over. I decided to go to a school where we had the weekends off so I could ski....
Who owns ‘freeskiing’? Well the short answer is that behind almost every one of your favourite ski brands is a massive corporation. Why does that matter? From August ‘13 to January ‘14 sales of ‘twin tip’ skis totalled $55million in the US. This is a company that after only 10 years has the famously anti-corporate skateboarding scene by the balls. Possible brand collabos to be modelled by every noughties teenage boy’s favourite hotel heiress....
However, as temps cooled down and the rain turned to snow.
The meticulously shaped castle captivated the riders as they explored the different transfer options and features. See for yourselves, as the riders are getting creative in the GoPro Course Check Video. (Pic: David Wise) (Pic: Kai Mahler) “There are a million different transfers. We have an amazing amount of options,” explains David Wise (USA). Check out the GoPro angle of his switch backflip on the 28m kicker. Kai Mahler (SUI) also sampled the transfer kicker landing on the wall of the huge pipe extension....
In January of 2010 the little toaster shaped camera changed the game. In the months and years following GoPro edits flooded the internet. Soon enough everyone and their uncle was filming themselves with a GoPro, Contour or other POV camera. As these cameras made their ways to the masses, the flood of content became overwhelming. In short, the novelty of the murky colors, blown highlights and creative mounts couldnt last forever....
Words and Photos by: Jamie Walter Its been a while since I last shot a major freeskiing event. Fortunately, the forecast sounded much more optimistic when I woke up Saturday morning. Torin Yater-Wallace checks out some of the rail features before dropping in during practice. Blue skies begin to emerge as the first competitors of semifinals drop in. Noah Morrison on the second booter. The “launch pad.” Alex Hackel, a good friend of mine who grew up skiing at Sunday River, was no exception....
