I was supposed to write a comic this week.
These magazines, especiallyPowderandBike, had such a huge impact on me and my cohort of friends.
The first issue ofPowderto show up every year is a big deal.
It signals the start of the real season of anticipation.
It’s a tangible reminder that winter is near.
I’d never even seen a chairlift but I was a sponge for all things skiing andPowderdelivered my fix.
For me,Bikemagazine was always meant to be read in shops.
I can’t think ofBikewithout smelling chain lube and stale yellow beer.
How many young skiers dream of appearing in a two-page spread?
“Someday I’ll get that shot that they can’t refuse.”
“Someday I’ll be good enough at drawing to see my work show up under that masthead.”
No, they weren’t perfect, but neither is skiing.
And for that, I’m eternally thankful.
