A daunting task for everyone no matter the background. Lets not forget the often decent breakfast and piping hot coffee waiting before getting up to the hill. Look both ways, move across quickly, hyper aware of ice underneath the fresh-plowed snow. Thumbs out, ready to hustle as soon as someone pulls over. I love hitchhiking to ski. Its one of my favorite things about living close to the mountains. Or drop partway, hitch, traverse, ski, traverse again, and hitch back. And theyre all wonderful. My partner prefers the bus. She dislikes the emotional labor of hitching, and prefers her podcasts....

Title image: One day’s worth of snow. Its clear Santa had me on the naughty list this year. Earlier this week, an unprecedented storm was set to hit Western Washington. The forecast called for over two feet at Snoqualmie Pass. To drive up to the Pass in those conditions was a fools errand. Sure, we had access to my partners Impreza, kitted out with studded tires. But any Washingtonian knows it doesnt take much for WashDOT to lock down Snoqualmie Pass....
Im going to do my best to not include any skiing-related sources. She likes books about polar expeditions that nobody survives, that document how everyone died in excruciating detail. I do not like these books. So, when she recommendedThe Half Life of Valery Kas being good, and also squelchy I wasnt optimistic. Great plot, great characters, scary nuclear stuff, highly recommend! I thought to myself, Hmm.. It was just the right size for a single checked bag. The San Luis Obispo Airport is the quickest way to fly to Tepe and Tacos. The airport is about an hour away from the venue and has a rental car lot. You wind in around the San Rafael Mountains, over massive bridges that span dry Jurassic-aged riverbeds. As far as race infrastructure goes, there were port-o-lets, dumpsters, and RV parking....

I know, I know, for most users of this website, were technically only skiing for ourselves. Cossacks were my one trick that I had dialed, and they felt so, so good. It didn’t look cool....
We got there before dark and spun a few laps on the two-seater up top. The terrain, which I hadnt seen yet because it was my first time at Skibowl, was exciting. Fall line from the top chair was a series of cliffs, narrow rock slots, and sparse trees. You head skiers right, and a wide-open bowl follows a cliff hip. Small side hits peppered themselves throughout, meaning whichever route you ultimately chose, youd be entertained....
