IF3 Whistler wrapped up after four loose days of ski films and partying. The judges this year had to sit through and analyze a whopping 110 films. I dont envy them whatsoever. ‘Tis the season to take your new skis in to the shop, drop them off for a mount, and come back to find them mounted backwards, mounted crooked, mounted for the wrong binding, dimpled, or something equally as deflating. I’ve written a couple articles on how to double-check this doesn’t happen to you (hereandhere) but I figured a comic might stick better!
But in qualis, it was sick to see Elias Syrja back on the start list. The comeback for the king is fully on, even if he narrowly missed finals this time around. It’s sick to see freeski so well attended despite the questionable weather. But FIS needs to decide something about poles in Big Air. She slightly tickled the grab but still scored 87.5. It wasn’t clean enough to challenge the top sports, sick to see her crushing though....
When you meet, Jesper Tjader he certainly doesnt come across as a complete maniac. Quite the opposite, in fact. Hes an unassuming, softly-spoken man who clearly has no interest in being the center of attention. Hes a mellow maniac if there ever was one. Still just 28, it seems like Jesper has been around forever. He enters this season fresh off the back of one of the most successful winters of his life....
Oft forgotten, it was about time the East Coast got a proper park ski test of its own. The NS crew joined 10 heavy-hitting girls and guys from various ski backgrounds. Fair enough, its not often you get to roll deep through a private park in Quebec. Some days, conditions are bulletproof and thats when you want a skinny park ski. Less impact, quicker edge to edge and at least some chance of gripping on that boilerplate....
The local ski hill doesnt have snow yet, but yards in town are sprinkled with local political signs. Its election season again here in the United States. At least here in Teton Valley, the election cycle always lines up with the ski season. We held our primary elections back in May, as the diehards skied their last few spring lines. In November well cast our votes 10 days before the hill opens back up for the season....
I’ve accepted this fact, seeing that I still ride rails as much as I do. But I see these threads on NS all the time about what skis are the most durable. The bottom line is: If you’re riding park, your skis are screwed. I’ve seen other people ride blends hard in the park for 1-2 years with minimal edge cracks. Personally, I think it’s best to just try out a ton of skis....
Theres Someone in my Head but its not me - Roger Waters. Rudy Lepine sports a bushy beard, big-rimmed glasses, and a soft-spoken personality. You might remember Rudy from the early SIMPLE edits or his recent web series Sensorial Quartet. I was working in kitchens my first couple of years here in Whistler and skiing a lot. For some reason, my fucking Instagram just started blowing up. You should start making plans because this time will go byfast....
It’s hard to overstate the impact Freshtival has had on the Rockies ski scene. That changed in 2003 when Fresh Skis brought Feshtival, the first ski movie festival, to town. All of a sudden, all the best films and athletes were coming to Calgary. The main thing FRESH did was jumpstart a modern ski scene in the Rockies. pro skier Eric Hjorleifson Skier magazine called the original Freshtival A coming-out party for the Calgary ski scene....

It snowed up high a week ago. I only know because I can see the remains, taunting me on the peaks. A light dusting of powdered sugar on the granite, just out of reach. Its easy to focus on skiing when winter forces itself into your psyche like that. The only options then are to retreat to the desert or embrace an early ski season. But sometimes we get a true autumn....
