Olympic Preview?

I reached out to many of the pre-event favorites to see how they were feeling before the big show. Very, very thankful to be in the position for the 3rd time. I am definitely hyped because this contest is really rare. Will Matej Svancer be celebrating in china? Sarah and Mathilde already have Olympic medals. “I’m super excited. Nendaz Backcountry Invitational

Pulling off a backcountry (freestyle) event during a pandemic AND a snow drought is pretty next level. But that’s what Nendaz Freeride, Mont Gele Gear, and Tanner Hall managed to do this weekend. The night before the comp, at the riders' meetings, both hopes and expectations were low. A direct result of a face check that didn’t look positive, not just speculation. The next morning we were greeted by clouds and a thin crust on the snow....

Give ‘em a shot

The 2014-15 winter was only my third season on skis. It was a big deal. It still feels like a big deal eight years later. There was barely any snow on the ground, our boots stunk, and we were over it. And then we got an email from Thea at Sierra at Tahoe. That news revitalized our spirits. So we rallied, and made the most of Sierra at Tahoe. Dave took me seriously, and gave me a shot....

The Matej Svancer Interview: X Games Judging, Switching passports and who would win that game of SLVSH

All photos by Oskar Hall and provided by Faction Skis Matej Svancer is an insanely talented skier. You wouldn’t bet against him adding an Olympic Gold next month either. His style, story and personality means that he can’t really be judged by his medal collection alone. I’ve skied in the Czech Republic maybe three times in my life. We used to go to Austria a lot, just on ski holidays....

Parking Lot Nirvana

I’ve been really intrigued lately by the idea of illustrated panoramas. So here’s a little view from the parking lot. What’s the snowboarder in the truck going to go ride tomorrow? Where did the folks in the camper get that avy sign? Can you name all of them? I’ve put together a folder of full-res versions of all the panorama pieces I’ve done for download. Here’s the link to download all those panoramas!...

What Outdoor Retailer Was, Is, & What it Can Be.

It’s where all the big brands in snow come to flex. There wasn’t a single Ski Boot in the building this year. No Patagonia, No Salomon, No K2. What WORKED in the 2022 OR Show: It was intimate & small brands got to have their shine. I’ve never spent the time to talk to smaller brands that I didn’t have a meeting with. I noticed that error of my own ways almost immediately....

Cody Cirillo Chats About His Latest Project "Southwest Scramble"

https://www.newschoolers.com/videos/watch/1029345/Southwest-Scramble---A-Bike-to-Ski-Journey---FULL-MOVIE 1. What’s the hardest part about putting a project like this together? I’m sure you had your fair share of speedbumps along the way. Oh man, where to start. I originally planned on doing a Colorado focused project all winter. I had the idea to do the bike trip during a long drive. With conditions fleeting in the Southwest though, we had to move fast for it to work....

Line of Thought: Daniel Loosli

Its easy to see why. The mans skiing is easy, like, reallyeasy on the eyes. Daniels unique approach was guided by injuries of his youth and other sports collaborating into what it is today. His trick bag is minimalist in the best way possible. He opts to use his hands and edge control much more liberally than most riders today. Photo: Martha Sverdrup. How did you get your start in skiing?...

How to Review Gear

And of course, a huge thanks goes to Jonathan at Blister Review for helping shape my reviewing process. Go read their reviews, they do a great job! Good is a relative term This is the number one stumbling block of new reviewers. A ski is good if they like it, and bad if they dont. What makes a ski good is different for every skier. There is no Best Ski out there, there is only the best ski for you....
