Snowboards go in the back of the Subaru, theres only so much room in the racks for skis. Were all in basketball shorts and hoodies. I bought this car because it had a tape deck. The cord from the adapter snakes back, carefully routed through the center console to the back seat....
The mountains bring us in contact with some weird and amazing people. We ski together, talk about lines or life over a few beers, and live it up. Skiing and the lifestyle doesn’t make sense to some people but in our community we get each other. It’s fucking hard to say goodbye to people. It’s maybe even harder to process feelings in these situations. The numb feeling almost like indifference, almost like it doesn’t impact you....
I didnt have much time to register what was happening before it happened. A routine powder run. A small cliff drop. And then turn, epic face shot, huge grin and repeat. Id basically made it to the bottom of my run when something went wrong. Even as I write this, I still dont know exactly what. All I can really say is my ski didnt release and I felt the dreaded pop....

With minimal opportunities to compete this winter, the athletes were chomping at the bit. The stage was set, the jump was perfect and the level was through the roof. I swapped out my skis “Meat Cleavers” for my big powder snowskate “Bubba Slow Loove”. We met up with the homegirl Amanda, another rippin lady snowskater. I had to stand embarrassed by my stranded car while Wal-Mart shoppers wandered past. Hey, kid, you got a needle!? Awkward, exhausted silence. My sandals shuffled and I was acutely aware of the sweat in my stubble. No, sorry, I dont have a needle, I just have skis. You got money for a needle!? Man, I just need a needle! Sorry, no money. Inside the Wal-Mart was no better. The grime and sweat of four days of skiing hard in the sun stood out....
He was in 3rd grade when he first skied. His mom told him he had to get a winter sport and he wasnt too good at basketball! So he started an after-school ski program, at Bolton Valley Vermont. The first time I ever went skiing, it was just such a weird and amazing way to travel. Once you experience it, its impossible to not want to do it more. The ability to fly is the only ability thats cooler than sliding on snow....
