Episode 7: Ullrfest

Whatever fell got windblown into the trees on the main face. For two days we skied probably 10% of the sad 30% of open terrain. Our first day at Keystone left us scratching our heads. The medium jumps could have been from Minnesota: they were flat in every way. There were definitely some creative and unique features built though which made it worth lapping. I feel like a lot of my best ideas come to me in fast food establishments....

NEW SNOW=AVALANCHES

Until this week, snowfall in Utah this year has been a less than sub-par. The weather patterns seem to have shifted and we have been blessed with a week full of storms. This weekend is calling for multiple feet and it looks like next week is the same story. Hopefully our patience has paid off and we will have a strong second half in the Wasatch. Remember, with all this new snow comes avalanches....

Dew Tour Final Day

Today was the last day of the Winter Dew Tour stop in Snow Basin, Utah. Today began at 8am with a short 1-hour practice before finals started. Everyone in finals was bringing their A game with very tech, stomped runs. Almost every athlete scoring in the 80’s or higher. The crash looked really bad and the medical staff were reluctant to even let him stand up. Be sure to tune in for the updates about everything leading up to the X-Games....

On3p Billy Goat

The construction is so clean and everything seems to have been done with immense care and effort. These are not half assed skis (coughMichael Lishcough), they are beautiful works of art. These weigh about the same as my JJ’s did with Dukes for reference. I waxed and scraped them 4 times prior to riding, and brushed the last time. I didn’t do anything to the edges. I took a bunch of POV footage but it’s all boring and stupid....

Red Freeski Junior Finals

The day 2 finals at Red Mountain saw some impressive skiing and some big bails as the juniors shredded into hard packed snow and rocky exposure. Big cheers for the winners and some hard heartbreak for those that didn’t stick their lines. This year’s finals saw the 16-18’s skiing the entire venue of link’s line, the 12-15’s limited to the kitchen sink and no lower cliff band and the 7-11 having to stick to the open run with no big bands of rock open....

Addressing Wicked Wind

Trees look more like shrouded towering ghosts than the gentle Jeffrey pines of the week prior. With snow comes weather; and with this storm, lots of both. Sometimes that combo is a game-changer in terms of running chair lifts. Sometimes the game changes in a matter of minutes and without notice. The snow is going to be amazing. Some guests are infuriated. But we simply cannot and will not open a chair lift to skiers and riders with excessive winds....
